Beyond Incumbency Advantage: Social Reach, Political Trust, and Leadership Legitimacy in the Karanganyar Village Head Election

The victory of a newcomer in the Karanganyar village head election represents a shift in leadership that challenges the incumbent’s position. Strengthening public exposure and social reach serves as the primary strategy, leveraging the potential of changing times, complemented by a track record of social contributions as an indicator of integrity in political legitimacy. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the political strategies employed by newcomers in village-level political contests. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study will explore and gain an in-depth understanding of the strategies employed. The study adopts Scott’s framework as its primary analytical tool, specifically to understand resistance to the incumbent’s dominance. The main findings of the study indicate that the strategies fall into two categories. First, strengthening exposure and social reach, which involves the use of automated digital messaging; here, the use of digital information spam serves as a key tactic to target the opposition’s constituency while simultaneously increasing and maintaining support among young voters—the next primary target for progressive ideas. Second, the strategies focus on the track record of social contributions by newcomers who are able to embody trustworthy values in leadership, and emphasize that the relationship between newcomers and the community fosters positive activities—not merely as a form of loyalty, but as an integral part of morality. This research contributes to adapting village-level political contests to keep pace with the times without disregarding local wisdom. The findings highlight the growing importance of digital communication strategies in expanding political outreach and engaging voters within village electoral contests.
