English Adverb Found in The Novel “The Fault In Our Stars”

Abstract

This research aims to analyze adverbs in a literary work, namely a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars. The researcher is interested in the adverbs in this novel excerpt because these adverbs provide a better understanding of the sentence. So, the main purpose of the research are to identify the forms of adverbs in the novel by John Green, to describe the position of adverbs in the novel, and to analyze the function of adverbs in excerpts from the novel. In conducting this research, the writer uses the adverb theory from Quirk (1973) and the theory by Murthy (2003) to find out the adverb forms, positions adverb and its function in a sentence. There are three results from this study, namely; First, there are two types of words and adverbs of degree, namely derivational and inflectional. Second, there are three adverb positions in the quoted sentences of this novel, namely initial position, middle position, and end position. The third is the adverb of adverb function in this novel quote in a sentence, namely adjective modifiers, verb modifiers, adverb modifiers, preposition modifiers, noun modifiers, and sentence modifiers.
