Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a tropical fruit plant with significant value as a food source and genetic resource. This plant exhibits high diversity based on both morphological and genetic characteristics. This diversity was formed through domestication processes, selection, vegetative propagation, and hybridization with closely related species. This review aims to analyze the genetic diversity and DNA variation in breadfruit, as well as examine their relationship with morphological characteristics and fruit quality. The method used is a literature review of various studies on the genetic diversity of A. altilis using AFLP, SSR/microsatellite, and ITS markers, as well as chloroplast genome analysis, which were then compared with studies based on morphological and fruit characteristics. The review results show that breadfruit possesses a fairly broad genetic and phenotypic diversity. AFLP analysis indicates more than one genetic origin for breadfruit, along with the contributions of Artocarpus camansi and A. mariannensis in its domestication history. SSR markers also show polymorphism that can be used to distinguish cultivars and analyze phylogenetic relationships. This genetic diversity is related to variations in fruit shape, size, skin color, surface texture, flesh color, seed number, fruit weight, and nutritional properties. Thus, molecular characterization combined with morphological traits provides an important foundation for germplasm conservation, cultivar identification, and breadfruit breeding programs.
